Tuesday 21st August – Morgat

Once again we had breakfast delivered; the lad is really nice and tonight has told us that there is an open air concert on in the centre of Morgat, 8pm until midnight and suggested we go along.

The weather threatened rain with dark clouds all around and gusting wind.

Whilst we contemplated what to do today, there was suddenly excitement when a dolphin appeared alongside the visitors’ pontoon in the marina.  It seemed to have followed some dinghies in; they tried to lead it out but it just seemed to want to play. As ever, the photos just show an empty expanse of water where the dolphin had been. Eventually it seemed to have gone and things settled down again.

Then, the yacht just across the pontoon from us decided to do the short hop up to Camaret despite the weather. As we got off to see them off, there was a splash and there was the dolphin again right at the stern of the yacht.

By lunchtime, still no rain.  We decided to call its bluff and went off trekking to the main town of Crozon as we had heard that it had a supermarket at which we could re-stock the larder.

To get there, you walk around the beach and on for what seems like an eternity and then, when you get to a roundabout, signposted ‘Centre Ville’ to the right, don’t be fooled, you are still nowhere near.  This is where you set up base camp, strap on the crampons and get out the pitons; then you climb a hill for about 20-25 minutes, wishing you’d brought the oxygen (I kid you not).  You then see the town hall and a car park at the top of the hill and approach cautiously as you realise you could be hallucinating due to the rarefied atmosphere.  You’re not – you’ve arrived – there is a bank and the supermarket in sight.

However, even better, there is an inconspicuous alley to the side of the supermarket and, when you pass down it, it opens into the most enchanting square, with a church as its focal point and fabulous shops selling all manner of things.

The tiring climb forgotten, we had a great time wandering around and were delighted to find a shop that could sell us a spare glass for our cafetiere as the previous one had finally cracked earlier on the trip, after many years use.

Having re-stocked, the good news was that it was down hill all the way back to the marina – with the trolley doing good service yet again.  To cap it all, we remained dry!
