Saturday 12th July – Punta de l’ Avançada, Mallorca (One Year On J)

Amazingly a year has now passed since we slipped our berth at Ocean Village on a heavily overcast Thursday lunchtime.  Since then our journey has taken us many new places and we have met many like-minded people and made some great friends.

Peter and Carola had a surprise for us for the day; they had arranged two scooters so that we could explore the surrounding island.  Fortunately they had told us about it beforehand so we knew we had to be up early.

We had a fabulous day, scooting around; as if to remind us of our departure from England it was a little cloudy and a little windier today but this had the welcome upside of it being a little cooler.

This was the first time we had taken out scooters and Richard had the challenge of picking it up fast as he had me on the back and, once out of town, immediately had to negotiate some steep hills and sharp bends as we headed off into the hills.

First we went up to Cabo de Formentor, the headland at the far northeast of the island.  On the way we had some great views down into the calas to the north of the island.  There was a spectacular view of the headland as we dropped down to the lighthouse at the end, though we weren’t impressed by the price of the coffee in the café there!

From there we made our way west again and visited Pollença ‘town’ which is a few miles inland from Puerto de Pollença.  By now it was lunchtime and we selected a lovely local restaurant away from the tourist haunts for lunch and Peter treated us to a bottle of ‘fizz’ to celebrate our first year aboard.

After lunch, Carola and Richard went for walk up a steep climb of steps to the church above Pollença (Eglésia del Calvari) whilst I kept Peter company at a café at the bottom of the steps for some pudding J.

From there we drove on across country to visit Alcudia ‘town’, where we did a bit of window shopping in the quaint small streets (though I did buy some shoes) then on to Puerto de Alcudia where we had a wander around the marina whilst Peter and Carola did some more window shopping.

We returned exhausted around 7.30 pm and returned our scooters to the shop.

Back on Pyxis we had tapas and enjoyed some very nice Rioja we had in especially for the occasion.
