Tuesday 24th February – Cagliari (Pancakes and Carnivale)

Today, being Shrove Tuesday, was the last day of the carnivale so we needed to shoe horn in both a pancake party and a visit to the carnivale.

At lunchtime everyone gathered at the gazebo armed with pancake mix and fillings.  Cape supplied their hotplate and Bethany and Bryn were set on pancake production - they had their work cut out cooking so many pancakes but a yummy time was had by all J

Late afternoon the carnivale contingent assembled and headed off together into town in search of the procession.  Having located the procession which was already underway, we followed the tail of it up to the Bastione Saint Remy where the ‘Guy’ was set up ready to be burned.  This time there seemed to be even more foam, crazy string, and confetti being used in the streets.

Up on the Bastione, a live band was performing on the small stage that had been erected and they were very good, playing quite a few numbers that we recognised.  We duly stood by the barrier as 7pm approached and were surprised to see archers parade into the square.  The archers took up position and set the guy on fire using flaming arrows.  It took a couple of attempts to set it on fire but, once alight, it went up really quickly.

Afterwards we listened to the band for a while and even had a dance before heading back through the streets to the marina.
