Sunday 11th July – Órmos Navarínou, Peloponnese – Kiparissia, Peloponnese

This morning we were up and out early for a trip north along the coast.  We watched the sun rise over the mountains and then headed off.  There was no wind and we motored along in quiet seas, sitting up on deck watching the coastline scenery as we went – it is greener here, with olive groves and also some large greenhouses.  As we approached the shallow passage between the island of Próti and the mainland, a swordfish leapt right out of the water just ahead of us, right in front of the bow – an impressive sight.

There was a slightly odder view as we went past Agrilos (where there is a small harbour that is too shallow for Pyxis); on the coast there is a ‘Disney-esque’ castle, Kastro Paramython (Castle of the Fairytales) built by a guy called Haris Fournakis, a local boy made good who returned from America to build this folly, and jolly weird it looks too.

We arrived here in Kiparissia just before lunchtime; Joshua was already here as they left Órmos Navarínou yesterday and they caught our lines for us as we came alongside the harbour wall.  There are only a few yachts here;  the pilot book tends to put people off coming here as the shelter used to be quite poor, however, since it was written, the harbour walls have been extended and the harbour now offers pretty good all round shelter.

The view from here is lovely with high, green mountains in the background behind the town and some great looking beaches either side of the harbour; though picturesque, seeing the town on the hillside does mean that it will be a tough climb for provisions.

This afternoon has been really hot with little wind.  We have given Pyxis a clean and tidy, and this evening we have had dinner on board.
