Monday 25th August – Cala Son Saura, Menorca - Cala Porté (En Porter), Menorca

We decided on an early night to get some sleep after a long day and in case the weather turned over night; the early wind and swell had subsided and we hoped for some rest.

So, on cue, just after midnight the wind returned (a little stronger this time L) and the swell built up again – both from the S/SW.  The good news was that we were nose on to the swell making it more comfortable than being broadside, the bad news was that the cala was open to the S/SW (along with most of the calas along this coast) so the swell had a good distance to establish itself.  For a few hours Pyxis and the other boats around her were doing their impression of a bucking bronco.  Pleased to say we were able to sleep through some of it – I think the nose to swell really helps.

Fortunately the wind then eased completely and slowly calm descended on the bay; by breakfast anyone arriving would have wondered what the fuss was about.

Having caught up on some sleep, some book and some breakfast during the morning, we decided to ship anchor and explore along the coast.  The wind was light and a band of heavy cloud kept the sun at bay and the temperature down – it was quite pleasant.

We motored along the coast with pilot book in one hand taking Pyxis into some of the calas on the way.  Some of the calas have no development but some are quite built up.  Part way along, at Cala Santa Galdana, we again saw the large Russian boat ‘A’ that we had seen at Isla Dragonera and Sóller – is it following us?

We decided that we would give Cala Porté a try this evening; another Mailasail yacht, Cape, had stayed here for a while on their travels so it sounded a good anchorage.  When we arrived, we were pleased to see that they were here again and so we launched the dinghy so that we could go and say ‘hello’.

First, though, Richard decided to pop a couple of cans of diesel into Pyxis as the tank was getting low and so they beat us to it.  Sarah and David, a lovely couple who are on tour with their two children, swam across to us to say ‘hello’ and tell us that they had been reading our blog.  What a coincidence!  They came on board and, over drinks, we shared a few stories and experiences J

Once again, it’s a small world on this trip; we found that we knew quite a few of the people that they had met on their travels.

This evening we went ashore for a walk around town, which is up a very steep flight of steps.  We really like the feel of the town here, it seems very friendly, and we decided to eat in a restaurant up there; the service and food were both very good.

We are now settling down for what we hope will be a quieter night.
