Sunday 24th August – Porto Petro, Mallorca - Cala Son Saura, Menorca (& Dolphins)

At 1.30am last night, I was reminded of a phrase I once heard: ‘No good deed goes unpunished’.  Having done the heroic thing and rescued the mooring buoy last night, it woke us up, banging on the hull in the early hours and we spent a good deal of time trying to un-hook ourselves and get some sleep.

Nevertheless, this morning we were up and set off for Menorca early.  We were expecting the wind to fill in over the day.  In fact the wind never made much of an appearance and we donked all the way, around 45 miles, but this gave the batteries a chance to reach that valued 100% charge and it enabled me to fill the water tanks.  As we travelled along I even used some of the water to clean the spray hood and cockpit as they were looking a bit in need of help.

The sea was only lightly rippled by the light wind but there was still quite a bit of residual northerly swell after the strong winds yesterday.

The highlight of the day was a surprise visit from a pod of dolphins.  They were quite a way off the port bow when we spotted them but having spotted us, they made straight for us, and played around the bows for a time.

As we were on auto-helm with no-one around, we abandoned the cockpit and went to the bow to enjoy the fun.  The water here is so clear that we had our best view of them so far.  We could see them diving and returning to us and turning over under the water showing us their white undersides; it was absolutely fantastic.

We arrived here on the south coast of Menorca during the afternoon and have anchored in Cala Son Saura for the night.  The bay was very busy when we arrived with small local motor boats but as usual by evening they had all left (except for one brave soul) and now only the yachts remain.

Currently we are being rocked around in a swell that was not on the forecast, ho hum, so it could be a sleepless night ahead.
