Saturday 21st May – Mykonos

I got up this morning and said to Richard that I was looking forward to a day off, with no excitement.  I spoke too soon…

First of all a charter yacht tried to leave and found its anchor stuck solid – it was the yacht that had been on our starboard side before we moved.  They spent half an hour or so trying to free it by going ahead and astern but without success.  Richard was talking to someone who comes here regularly and found out that there is a large chain that runs down the middle of the harbour – it seems we were lucky that we set our anchor right over the other side of the harbour when we backed in.  Anyone coming here, beware! Apparently a large racing yacht was stuck last week and needed to get a diver down so it is a regular feature.

Mats from Starlight whistled them and asked them to reverse into a space so that he could hop aboard with his ‘rope and hook’ gadget that can be used to free anchors that are fouled on a chain.  It was not easy, but eventually Mats was able to help them free their anchor – they managed to lift the heavy chain just enough so they could use a rope from the opposite shore to ease the anchor out from underneath.  So a little later than expected they went on their way, with quite a tale to tell about their holiday.

A little later, the motor boat next to us left and another motor boat moved down to take its place (wanting to use the tailed line).  It, too, was not a smooth arrival and involved quite a bit of shouting but by late morning everything seemed to have settled down.

Richard went off for a walk before lunch to see if he could top up our bread supply.  He headed to the small beach resort just up the coast at St Stefano for a recce; the small supermarket was looking very closed up but he did spot a taverna claiming to be a Guinness bar which may be worth a visit!

The wind has got up again this afternoon making it challenging for boats arriving once again.

Late afternoon we went for a walk into Mykonos Town and found some fresh bread.  We managed to find a spot by the beach sheltered from the wind on the way back and sat and had a drink whilst watching the world go by.  Later, windswept from the walk back, we returned to Pyxis for the evening.

The weather man has said that as the wind is coming from the direction we want to go and is due to get stronger for the next few days so we may be here a little longer.
