Monday 21st April – Barbate (Vejer de la Frontera)

Today the weather was good enough for a visit inland to the town of Vejer de la Frontera, a place that had been recommended to us by a Spanish yachtsman in Puerto Sherry.  Early this afternoon, we walked up through town to the bus station and caught the local bus.

The town is high up in the hills and it is a very pretty old town with an ancient wall, a castle, and whitewashed buildings, and, as usual along this Andalusian coast, it has Moorish influence in the architecture.  We climbed up and down the small streets of the old town and enjoyed the views out across the plains and out to sea.

We noticed that quite a number of groups were wandering around with guides, so we think that it a local tourist attraction.

It was a good decision to go; it is really worth a visit if you are in the area and it has some lovely bars for drinks and tapas.

This evening we were back quite late and tired after our travels.  (We had spotted another supermarket near the bus station in Barbate which needed investigation on our return – important if you are sailing.)  But it was good to finally get off the boat for some exercise after having such awful weather for so long.
