Thursday 30th July – Argostoli, Kefalonia – Póros, Kefalonia

This morning we actually did get up and set off for pastures new.  We had no wind for the first couple of hours but then we had a lovely close hauled sail around the south east corner.  The wind then came onto the nose and we tacked up the coast for a few hours before motoring on into Póros, a small village with a tiny harbour, tucked under Ák Pronos.

We had been recommended to come here, not by the pilot book, which, if you read it, will put you off, but by John that we met in Argostoli who told us that the ferry no longer docks in the harbour itself but further out on a new mole and so this is now a comfortable town quay on which to berth.

However, what the pilot book does get right is the depth.  The chart is marked at 2m which is tight for us at 1.9m depth.  As we went stern to the quay, the depth alarm went off and as I backed up I noticed that we were in 1.8m and in danger of stopping!

So, we went out again, pulling up the anchor as we went.  We identified a tighter spot between two yachts further along, nearer the old ferry dock, which we thought may be deeper and gave it a go.  Great stuff; we are now berthed in 3m, so are very comfortable.

Once again there is a free hose on the shore and everyone showered using it this evening.  Because it is a very small town here, it is a really nice and friendly crowd.

We’ve had a quiet evening in the cockpit watching the world go by – it is a lot quieter here than in Argostoli.
