Saturday 14th May – Sounion – Loutra, Kithnos

Last night, the northerly breeze dropped and all was calm.  However, whilst there was no wind, and the sea glassy, the anchorage is open to the south and a number of large vessels, a mile or so away in the channel, sent swell into the bay, which rolled us around as we were beam on to it, and gave us an uncomfortable night.  How babies like being rocked in a cradle becomes a mystery when you experience being rocked from side to side in a boat all night.

Needless to say, we were awake early and set off straight away, deciding to have breakfast under way, it being a bit smoother.  We motored for a couple of hours in light airs and we were then able to sail for a couple of hours in a gentle broad reach before losing the wind again.  We motored on and arrived here at Loutra, Kithnos, early afternoon – our first island in the Cyclades.  We helped ourselves to a stern-to mooring as there was no-one around and the harbour almost empty.  A yacht already here came to take our lines and we settled in for a rest.

During the afternoon the harbour master has appeared and the harbour has filled up with motor boats and what look like bare boat yacht charters; this evening the place is full.  However, the sun has been out and the wind has been light making it one of the most pleasant days this year.

The other side of the harbour, a hot spring flows down into the sea beside the beach.  It originates from an old, and now closed down, spa.  Having been for a walk around the small village here, we changed and went for a soak in the hot water at the sea’s edge.  Stepping forward deeper into the sea felt too cold in comparison and so we both decided to skip a swim.

This evening I have cooked on board and we are looking forward to an early night.
