Thursday 18th August – Néa Klima (Elios), Skópelos

39:08.300N 23:38.566E

We slept well but were woken early morning by the sound of the wind getting up – the forecast is showing a strong meltemi (north northeast wind) for the next few days through the Aegean, the strongest winds expected out to the east of us, but it depends whether the weather has read the forecast as to how much we will be affected here.

As it turned out the wind has been OK for the most part; the harbour is on the lee side of the island and is well sheltered from the swell but the wind gusts down intermittently from the pine clad hills above us, unfortunately mostly on the beam.  It was strongest this morning but eased this afternoon and came further around to our stern.  Despite the wind, the sky has been blue and the sun has shone.

We haven’t ventured far from Pyxis today; a few charter boats (including our neighbour) have left to hop along the coast in the lee of the islands and a few boats (mostly motor boats) have come in so we have been guarding our anchor given the cross-winds gusting in the harbour.

Richard went out to explore and get some bread at lunch time.  Néa Klima is quite a pleasant small hamlet – a few shops, tavernas and holiday apartments – nestled in a small bay.  There is a pleasant scent of the pine trees in the air from time to time.

Just along the quay a band has set up this afternoon – could be a long night…

This evening we decided to go ashore to eat.  As we walked past where the band was set up we noticed it was very busy with people and that food was being served.  We investigated further and discovered that the town was hosting a festival.  Along with the music and dancing they were offering everyone free fried calamari with salad, bread and a glass of wine.  It would have been rude to refuse and so we joined the calamari festival (at least that is what we were told it was) J
