Wednesday 31st December – Cagliari (New Year’s Eve)

This morning we returned the car, managing to squeeze in a quick trip to Lidl and pick up a few bulk items.  We hadn’t managed to visit it before as it is right out on the outskirts of Cagliari in Elmas.

Once back at the marina, Richard and I then set off by foot to our nearest supermarket to pick up a few other bits ready for the New Year party this evening at the marina, leaving the P’s to rest aboard.  After lunch Richard climbed into the big lazerette and fished out the generator so we could show the P’s that it is still possible to live in a civilised fashion with 240v power even on anchor.

This evening each boat took up a dish for the buffet and Antonello, the marina owner, had roasted pork and lamb for everyone.  The festivities tonight were great as usual and the gazebo was full with people eating and dancing.

We toasted in the New Year at midnight in the Sardinian fashion which involves waiting for the clocks to strike midnight and then popping all the corks on the champagne at once.  The marina provided the bubbly for the occasion which was even better.  Outside on the dockside we could see fireworks going off all across Cagliari

We then celebrated the UK New Year at 1am here with ‘first footing’, Auld Lang Syne and even a haggis.

With the P’s going home in the morning and us needing to be up with clear heads we had to be a little restrained with our festivities but the party was still going strong when we left around 2am.
