Wednesday 25th May – Mykonos (Early bath)

This morning when we awoke the sky was overcast and there was the threat of rain.  For a while there was no wind at all, zero knots J – but it didn’t last for long, just enough to lull the unwary into a false sense of security over their breakfast, and then normal service was resumed.

The charter boats, with their tight daily schedules, continue to arrive and then depart promptly each morning, despite the weather.  This morning was no exception and a 50 foot yacht tried to leave in a 20+ knot cross wind and got wrapped around the private Dufour 34 beside it; fortunately the latter was on a tailed line rather than on anchor otherwise the problem would have been far worse.  As usual the live-aboards went to help.  The lady on the Dufour asked Richard to assist on board, fending off the larger boat, and lowered the passerelle for him.  Unfortunately it wasn’t fixed correctly and Richard had an early bath as it collapsed under him.  Valiantly he continued aboard via the transom and helped out before returning to Pyxis dripping wet for a shower.

Never a dull moment, a little later two boats found they had managed to foul the large ground chain in the middle of the harbour with their anchors.  One, a catamaran, eventually managed to free itself but the other was stuck fast and had to call in a professional diver for help.

Around lunchtime it started raining so I made some bread aboard rather than trek into town.  The wind has howled all day but it has slowly brightened up and become quite sunny this afternoon.

This evening Chris from Carina has come aboard for a drink; he and some of the other boats further down have been tackling the Port Police today on the problems being caused by the ground chains – it’s possible they may be meeting the Mayor tomorrow to brief him on the situation.

We are waiting, along with a few other boats, for the wind to change, so we can continue on our way.  If it doesn’t let up soon we may need to revise our plans – maybe we will have to head off south and follow the wind around the charter circuit after all.
