Wednesday 22nd October – Cagliari (Thunder & lightning)

We awoke in the early hours of the morning to the sound of an approaching thunderstorm.  Despite the blinds across the hatch and having my eyes closed I could see the lightning flashes lighting up the bedroom.  We could tell the storm was close when the lightning flashes didn’t let the previous crack of thunder finish before lighting up the sky again.  Then the rain arrived…

When we spoke to Cape, they said that it was three inches of rain in about three hours as they had a bucket out and measured the depth of rain in it.  This was confirmed by Wandering Dragon based on the depth of water in their dinghy.  A number of the boats were fixing newly discovered leaks after the dry summer L

In the afternoon the sun came out and it was really hot but it felt quite humid.  The heavy rain has sent quite a flow of water down the nearby canal bringing with it quite a lot of debris and turning the water brown with silt – brings back memories of Lagos after a heavy downpour.

David was the hero of the afternoon when he spotted one of the marina owner’s dogs had somehow fallen in the water by one of the pontoons and was caught in the mooring lines and the electric cable.  He managed to free it enough to haul it part way out whilst Richard and Julia ran down to help free its hind legs.  Once the dog was back on dry land it naturally showed its appreciation by shaking itself dry, covering everyone nearby in dirty water, before running off apparently no worse for its ordeal.

Tonight we went with Stephen and Anne to try out a nearby pizza take-away.  We watched the guy create the pizzas and then put them in a large wood burning stove to cook.  We brought them back to Pyxis and ate in the cockpit enclosure but with the sides down as it is getting cooler in the evenings now.  The pizzas got the thumbs-up!   We’ll be trying those again.
