Thursday 5th February – Cagliari (Raising the fishing boat)

Coffee this morning was courtesy of the new espresso maker and I frothed up some hot milk so that we could have a cappuccino.  It worked excellently.

Whilst deciding on the day’s activities, a knock on the passerelle from David alerted us to the day’s drama unfolding in the marina.  Unfortunately a fishing boat had sunk alongside the mole and the various authorities and rescue services were determining what to do about it.  Activities to recover the boat carried on throughout the day.  A boom was put in the water to contain the fuel spill, skimmers were used to take the fuel off the surface, a large crane was bought in to lift the boat, divers went in to check the boat and fasten lines, the boat was righted and the fire brigade used pumps to empty it out, and eventually the boat was lifted ashore and taken into the boatyard.  Fortunately the weather remained quite warm and the wind fair making recovery more straightforward than it could have been.

Whilst waiting for the crane to arrive it was time to christen the bread maker.  I set it going to make bread and ended up spending much of the time watching it through the window on top of the machine, though the events in the marina distracted me eventually.

During another pause in proceedings, I took the opportunity to cut Richard’s hair; his nerves are improving quite a bit.

This evening we went to the gazebo as two of the locals were giving talks to help improve their English for some exams coming up.  It was quite a gathering and many of us took food up for dinner beforehand.  We decided to try our first loaf from the breadmaker – whilst definitely bread-like we think we need some more practice to get it right.

The talks were very informative - the first speaker gave a talk about the geology of Cagliari describing some of the hidden caves and tunnels, and the second speaker gave a talk on the aquatic mammals to be found within the Med – we now know what dolphins and whales we could see, the trick will now be spotting them!
