Wednesday 19th May – Methana - Póros

Late morning we made the short trip to Póros, the small island just off the coast of the Peloponnese.  We were there in about an hour and a half and soon stern-to on a virtually empty pontoon.

On the way we managed only a very brief sail down the coast before the wind became too light and the engine went on again.  As we entered the narrow channel into the large landlocked bay which runs down to Póros we spotted one of the large ferries leaving at speed and quickly decided to get out of the narrow channel; these ferries are like Isle of Wight ones but with attitude.

In the afternoon we had a walk around the town.  You can see it is a picturesque town as you approach it from the sea and as we walked along the sea front we saw a small sign to the clock tower.  We took the turning and went up very steep steps and winding tiny lanes up the side of the hill.  It was so much quieter and tranquil in those back streets, almost as soon as we turned onto the steps.  As we climbed higher, the lane seemed to wend its way through the gardens of houses with fabulous flowers streaming everywhere; the smell was just wonderful – rather better than the rotten egg smell of Methana!

We went down to the other side of town and walked back around the sea front.  There were a large number of tavernas and restaurants on the street, giving us a clue to how busy it is here in high season.  On the way I bought some rather nice Greek pastries from the delicatessen for dinner.

This is great, we thought, what a find.  However, a flotilla of 24 yachts has been arriving throughout the afternoon and the pontoon is now packed; Póros is a very popular place for the charter fleets.

This evening we ate onboard, working our way through the defrosted calamari, and then, as the sun went down, went for a wander along the waterfront which was now bustling with life.
