Thursday 6th May – Andíkirion (Some days you really shouldn't get out of bed)

This morning I went off to find a bakery armed with my Greek phrase book and came back with bread.  It was time to start blending in as we are the only non-Greeks here.

The rest of the day has not been good.  First I purchased a card for the water/ electricity on the pier and hooked it all up whilst Richard did some admin, only to find out the cabinet nearest us was broken.  So, since we can’t reach the only one that is working, we had no joy there.

No problem, said Richard, we’ll dig the generator out and give it an airing; so we put it out on the quay and topped it up with fuel.  Sadly, after carefully nursing it back to life with a new motherboard in Messolonghi, it now will not start (OK, it started and ran for a short period before breaking down).  Different symptoms, no clue as to what could be wrong.  So we resorted to the engine to charge the batteries and warm the water this afternoon.

Later, we decided it was time to get off the boat and see the sights, cheer ourselves up.  Just as we were going, another yacht turned up.  We caught their lines and cycled off only to discover my rear tyre was flat.  Back we came and I pumped it up and off we went.  We cycled out of town towards the ‘Temple of Athena and Old City Wall’ that was signposted.

Half way there, Richard’s tyre went flat; Richard turned to me and said ‘Has anything gone right today?’

The Temple of Athena/Old City Wall was up an un-trodden path, through a gate with a twist of wire keeping it closed, and perhaps smaller than we expected.  Nevertheless, somebody had been up there and cut the grass, and we had glorious views across the water from our vantage point at the top of the hill.  The good news was that it was downhill back, although we had to stop a couple of times to pump up the tyre on Richard’s bike.

Anyway, we got back to the boat and consoled ourselves with a beer.  I had just popped down for a shower, when just to finish off the perfect day nicely, the Port Police turned up to go through our paperwork and charge us our port duties (not seen them around here before); during all this another yacht turned up so it is quite busy this evening.

There are some days when you really shouldn’t get out of bed.
