Tuesday 15th September – Messolonghi (Mesolóngion)

After a good night of peace and quiet we decided to move on and so left after breakfast to head further east.

There was no wind when we set off and motored on for about half an hour.  Then, in just a small distance, the wind quickly built to 18 knots and the swell increased rapidly.  The wind and swell were right on the nose and within a short time the bow was plunging into the swell and covering the decks with sea water.

We looked at options and decided that the Bill and Laurel view (Sell Up and Sail) was shared by us at that moment – if you are tacking, you are going the wrong way, especially in the conditions we were experiencing.  With quite a distance still to go it was going to be a long slog.

We turned round and had a fantastic genoa run back down to Messolonghi and as we approached the canal entrance the wind and swell just died away to nothing as quickly as they had arrived.  We motored up the canal and our space was still waiting for us and so we were back on our berth by lunch time; at least we had managed to recharge the batteries.

We spent the afternoon doing admin and fishing (didn’t catch anything again) and have spent the evening downloading weather forecasts and deciding whether or not to try again tomorrow.
