Wednesday 9th September – Iris Hotel, Nidri, Levkas

Today we were out early and on the local bus to Levkas town.  The bus was very swish and the seats were very high up; we travelled along the coast road and so we had a good view of the sea and the canal separating Levkas from the mainland.

Although warm, it wasn’t too bad a walk from the bus terminal down to the large marina where we had a wander around; the marina seemed fairly quiet at the moment.  Richard obviously went and checked out the chandlery and then we went for a wander along the town quay.

We then went for a walk into town and, behind the busy touristy street fronting onto the sea, we found a more local and less touristy side to Levkas. The churches were interesting in that the bell towers were built separate from the church and some were built on iron frames rather than on a stone column.  At the other end of town we found a tiny ‘locals’ café where they didn’t speak English and we had lunch by pointing at what we wanted to eat.

We had spotted a small Carrefour next to the bus terminal when we arrived and so made a trip there before taking the bus back to Nidri; the bus back wasn’t quite as swish but we still had our sea view and spotted Gallini Club on the way back, a Sunsail base that we had spent a pleasant holiday in some years ago.

Late afternoon Richard went up to the pool and used the internet whilst I sat painting aboard Pyxis.  We had dinner on board and then David and Sarah popped over for coffee and a chat.
