Saturday 6th June – Siracusa (Syracuse), Sicily

For a while overnight the wind died away completely and everything was quiet and still in the bay, save for me seeking out the mosquito which had to bitten me at 3am.  Finding the critter was not easy but eventually I found it and terminated it.

Soon after we were up this morning the wind started to blow at a steady F4 building to a F5 most of the afternoon.  The clear blue skies have given way to some cloud and there has been a steady chop across the bay.  That said, it is still warm enough that we are both in bathing suits.  There has been little boat movement in the anchorage and most people have chosen to stay on board rather than tackle the white water rafting experience of taking a dinghy ashore.

We stayed on board too and this afternoon I took the opportunity to do some painting; Richard, meanwhile, finally finished his book.

After lunch we were bemused by a very small motor boat which went across the anchorage to the marina and then returned with a bride and groom in the back.  At the time it was blowing a definite F5 and the boat was bouncing around in the chop; we were watching as they only just about scraped past our bows.  Just beyond Pyxis they stopped and we wondered if they had developed engine trouble, but no, the other passenger on board then stood up with a large video camera and proceeded to try to film the couple as the boat rocked around and then made the rest of its way to the shore.  How they would have managed to smile is beyond me – just watching them rolling around was enough to make you feel sea-sick.  We can just about make out a marquee near the place where the boat landed so we expect that is where the wedding reception party will be and possibly an evening bash to keep us jigging into the early hours.

This evening we had a wind-downer rather than the traditional sun-downer as the wind chose this time to ease right off.
