Saturday 6th December – Cagliari (Amphitheatre, Castello & Poetto)

The weather was due to cheer up today so we were up early and off into town and up to the Roman Amphitheatre.  Unfortunately the recent rains have caused flooding and no-one was being allowed into the underground areas but the lady let us go in far enough to have a closer look at the arena and the decked concert area.

After this we walked Brian along the ancient walls at the top of the city separating the historic districts of Cagliari – with the weather being fair we had some great views down over the city.  We entered the Castello district through the Porta Cristina, walked past the Cittadella dei Musei and from there down to the Cathedral.

We arrived at the Cathedral just as a service was finishing and were able to hear the organ playing as people milled around and chatted at the end.  Afterwards we sat and had a coffee on the high terrace of the cathedral café overlooking the city; it was actually hot and still in the morning sunshine – great stuff.

As it was still quite early, we decided to bank the sunshine and cram in a trip to Poetto Beach.  On the way to the bus station we found a tiny bread shop on a backstreet and bought some mini pizzas so that we could eat lunch at the beach.

We planned to take the bus for a run to the end of its route and stop off at the beach on the way back.  Unfortunately this was only partially successful; the bus broke down on the way so we ended up sitting on the kerbside, miles out of town, eating our pizza whilst waiting for a replacement bus.

We did eventually make it to the beach and were able to walk along the shore in the afternoon sunshine but it was starting to get windy and feeling a bit colder by then so we soon headed back to the boat.

This evening we walked into town with Cape to visit the Christmas market and fun fair which has been setting up on Via Roma.  The fun fair was still under construction but the market stalls were open and we wandered the length of the street browsing.  Then, hungry after all our exertion, we went for some food nearby; guess what we had – pizza J
