Thursday 18th September – Mahón, Menorca

Today we went to the Museum of Menorca.  It had been recommended in the pilot book and also by the lady in tourist information.

Another recommended visit.  The museum opens at 10am and although we aimed to get there promptly, Pyxis time dictated that we didn’t get there until about 11am.

First of all we visited the church next door.  The church was interesting in that instead of the usual pictures and carvings on the walls, the walls themselves had been painted on.  The church is right on the side of the hill and has some impressive views across the harbour; it also has some problems with being too close to the edge…

The entrance fee to the museum is pretty small (and it is free on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings if you don’t want to pay at all) and it was really good.  When we arrived we had the place to ourselves, in fact security had to call the guy who takes entrance fees out from the back somewhere.  Unfortunately you are not allowed to take pictures inside and since we were the only ones there and so had own personal security team acting as impromptu guides (for something to do), we behaved ourselves.

The tour started with a 15 minute video on the archaeological history of Menorca, in English, which helped to consolidate the knowledge gleaned over the last few weeks around the island.  We were then guided to the two floors of exhibits.  The first floor was of pre-Talayotic, Talayotic, Roman and some Moorish remains which were very impressive and on the second floor, now left to ourselves as someone else had arrived, we wandered around the exhibits from the 17th and 18th century.

It was a lot better than we had expected.

Tonight we have had a quiet night aboard.
