Thursday 28th August – Cala Porté (En Porter), Menorca – Cala de Fornells, Menorca

Today we went for a final walk around town before setting off for pastures new.  On our way back we had a lovely view of Pyxis as the only yacht left in the cala, albeit still surrounded by peddalos.  It was tempting to stay on but we decided to go for a look around the rest of Menorca.

We motored in light airs along the south coast.  We first popped our heads into the next cala along, Cala Covas, which is reputed to be one of the most beautiful.  It was really nice but full of yachts parked stern to along the rocks; we were happy not to be staying as it was a bit more crowded than we liked.

We continued on our way and reached the corner.  As we rounded the corner, the wind increased a bit (right on the nose) and we could see many yachts in the distance near Mahón.  As they were all going the same way, we concluded that there was a race on.  As we got closer we could see that it was a race of classic boats and there were some beauties sailing along.

It was also apparent that their finishing line was directly in the line of our course and that they would be arriving there at the same time as us.  We continued motoring and altered course away from the line so we could stay out of their way.

It was like being back in the Solent!

We were pleased that we had decided not to stay in Mahón but go further up the coast; we don’t think there would have been any space for us.

We continued on our way and pulled out the sails after rounding the next point.  The wind had dropped again and there was not enough wind to switch the engine off but we were able to motor sail and we arrived in Cala de Fornells late afternoon and picked up a mooring buoy.  Due to the narrow entrance, it is like entering an inland sea and it is flat calm here tonight.

The scenery is reminiscent of a Scottish loch; this evening we sat on deck reading our books and watching the world go by.
