Saturday 10th May – Ceuta

This morning we visited the central market in Ceuta and I finally found some fresh coriander for sale – it seems to become rarer as we move east.  The market was on three levels with meat, fish, fruit and veg and household goods.

After the market, the P’s went off for a wander around town and a coffee outside a local café whilst Richard and I headed off to the supermarket for a few bits.  We were looking for LIDL and Supersol as we had seen signs for them but took a wrong turning and ended up way across town at a very large Eroski.  This is a supermarket that we like but I teased Richard about taking me to South Africa to go shopping, especially as we took the coast road back and passed the LIDL and Supersol just at the other side of the marina, a mere 5 minutes away from Pyxis!

Late this afternoon we went for another walk.  We went past the Parque del Mediterraneo and the Casino, and then back to the Museo de la Basílica Tardorromana.  This museum is underground and built on top of the remains of a late Roman basilica – the excavations are shown in detail and even some of the bodies have been left in place – quite eerie!

We then walked to the old castle battlements.  Inside the castle walls we had a sundowner in a lovely little pub that thought it was a church – there were religious paintings, candles and even a shrine inside.  There was a replica of Michelangelo’s God reaching out to Adam on the ceiling like in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.

Tonight we had chilli con carne (chilli con pesco for me).
