Tuesday 1st April – Puerto Sherry

Today we took the bikes into Santa Maria to take another look around, taking the road around the nearby beach on the way in.

We popped into the yacht club and had some tapas and a drink before touring around the sights again.  It was very pleasant sitting on the terrace overlooking the river watching the world go by in the afternoon sunshine, though it was starting to get a bit breezy.

We cycled and wandered through the town and did a little shopping in the supermarket until things re-opened after siesta.

At 5.30pm the old Plaza de Toros (bull ring) opened for visitors so we wandered in and had a thorough look round; the only cost of entry was to tell the guy which country we were from. Pleased to say there are no bull fights on at the moment.

We then found the main church, the Iglesia Mayor Prioral, was open; it had been closed on our previous visit and it was interesting to look around it. It dates back to 1486 and is described as having gothic, baroque and neo-classical elements.  As well as being richly decorated with an elaborate altar, it had some other unusual features such as vaults/ chapels all the way round the edges and a central enclosure with seating and the organ above.

A visit to Tourist Information also means we are now armed with maps and info on the area.

We finally arrived back at Pyxis around 7.30pm so we were very tired and have had a night in.
