Tuesday 31st July – Falmouth – Isles of Scilly

49:57.484N 6:20.822W

This morning the forecast was fair and we decided to set off for the Isles of Scilly, departing at 10.00 to catch the westerly tide past The Lizard.

Just outside Falmouth Harbour we sighted a submarine on the surface – first time we have encountered one at sea.

We had fabulous sun and blue skies the whole way across and Sun Factor 30 was required – hooray!  There was a pleasant Easterly force 3 but unfortunately not quite strong enough to push us along as it was directly behind us and so we ended up motor sailing.

As we circuited the top of the islands, Richard saw a couple of dolphins surface whilst I was looking at the charts down below – by the time he had called me upstairs they had disappeared.  Earlier we had seen what looked like flippers on the surface – we think these were either turtles or sun fish but were too far away to be sure.   Later I saw a sun fish coasting along the surface as we sailed past it.

We had a lovely day and arrived here in New Grimsby Sound between the islands of Tresco and Bryher at around 19.30 this evening – very picturesque and rocky.

P.S.  I now know why Richard put the smoke alarm up.  It is so that when I am cooking and it goes off (which it does every time I use the oven) he can go up on deck and say “It’s OK everyone, it’s only the wife’s cooking” - I’ve taken the batteries out to save my blushes.

P.P.S.  No fishing today.
