Saturday 30th July – Nisís Dhiaporos, Khalkidhiki

We had a day on board, reading.  Richard topped up his tan but I had a day in the shade of the cockpit with my book.  The bay has been busy today with holidaymakers on small motor boats.

Early evening the wind built to F5, straightening our chain in the direction of the rocky spit on the island; we were quite close and thought it best to move a couple of boat lengths further away for comfort.

When I pulled in the anchor, I realised we were in no danger of reaching the rocks as it took me some time to unhook the anchor from its setting in the mud – we were well and truly dug in hard.  Anyway, we eventually retrieved it and moved forward and away from the beach to reset.

The first time, we caught a large lump of weed and we didn’t set so I had clear off the anchor from my gardening with the boathook before we could set again.  The wind was by now blowing 22 knots.  Second time, we managed to set the hook and I put an additional 10m of chain out.  It feels a lot more comfortable away from the beach and we now have more space around us.  Inevitably, the wind decreased after our activity.

Whilst we were resetting our anchor, the French yacht which had gone off this morning returned and headed back to their original place ahead of us to anchor – they too took a couple of attempts and ended up setting their hook much further out from the shore as well.

We also noticed that the base of the dinghy has deflated but decided to leave that as a job for tomorrow.
