Wednesday 27th July – Pórto Koufó, Khalkidhiki – Nisís Dhiaporos

This morning many of the boats in the anchorage were up and on the move, albeit in different directions.

Richard made a quick dinghy run ashore (with oars rather than motor as we had stowed it last night) to take our rubbish and pick up a few fresh provisions whilst I tidied round.  Then we shipped anchor around our close 393 neighbour, missing him thankfully, and we set off.

There was no wind and so we motored round the middle finger and up to the island near the head, taking the opportunity to charge the batteries that have been powering the fridge and laptops for the last few days, and to run the water maker to top up on some water.

When we arrived at the island we decided to take the narrow and shallower entrance to the south rather than go the extra miles around to the north entrance and so I was sent to the bow to be on lookout as we came through the reef to the anchorages behind the island; fortunately all went well and we had more water than expected.

Once through we selected the first anchorage in the pilot book in Órmos Mesopanayia.  There were already a yacht and a motor boat in residence, so we joined them – the motor boat we think we recognise from Messolonghi.  Another yacht appeared later but we all have ample space as this is a much bigger anchorage than the last couple we have been in.

It was early afternoon when we arrived and the first thing to do was to go swimming.  The water is too deep and cloudy to swim the anchor but so warm it barely cools us off; but over the shallow sand by the island it is a bright turquoise colour.  We have spent the afternoon relaxing in the cockpit enjoying a brisk sea breeze to cool us.

Early evening the wind dropped and we have had a pleasant evening.
