Tuesday 17th May – Mykonos (Delos)

This morning we were up really early and walked into town with Christina and Rolf to get the first ferry across to DelosDelos is the central island of the Cyclades and is the reason for the name Cyclades – the other islands circle Delos; it is an important historical site as it was once the political and religious centre of the ancient world.

There was a cruise ship in alongside this morning and another arrived and anchored off as we waited for the ferry.  Today was going to be busier in town.

We decided to tackle the site in reverse order so that we would climb Mount Kinthos (112m) first before we ran out of energy.  It took us a good few hours to see the whole site, and we really enjoyed the fabulous view from the top of Mount Kinthos.  Having exhausted the whole site plus the museum, we headed back for the return ferry at 1.30pm.

Back at Mykonos we went for a Gyros pitta (and vegetarian version) before buying a few supplies from the supermarket.  We bumped into Jane and Steve at the taxi rank and shared a taxi back to the marina.

As we arrived back a fuel tanker was supplying one of the new arrivals, so we took the opportunity to top up ourselves with a couple of cans.  We have also discovered that the port has quite good showers available, an unexpected bonus.

This evening we went for drinks with Christina and Rolf on Enit Ula – sadly they will be off tomorrow, heading south, whilst we will be staying here a while longer.

The cruise ship alongside today has gone and been replaced by another which has come in this evening.
