Wednesday 22nd September – Messolonghi (Lake Trichonis)

This morning we were up and out again and started with a trip back to Plevron as it had been closed yesterday.  The site was large and still being excavated and restored from the look of it (lots of numbered stones piled around the site).  I stayed with the P’s and wandered around the first section whilst Richard walked all the way round; photography is not allowed so unfortunately no photos.

We then went on our way, this time inland to circumnavigate Lake Trichonis near Agrinio, the largest lake in this area.  The scenery was lovely.  We bought pastries for lunch at a bakery in one of the small villages we passed through and then stopped off beside the lake to eat them.  We stopped by a large restaurant/ bar complex that was closed and sat on a wall looking out over the lake whilst we ate.  After lunch we spotted that they had kindly left the tables on the terrace overlooking the lake and so we borrowed one whilst we finished our drinks.

Continuing our circumnavigation we stopped at Thermo, another major archaeological site in the area.  Sadly the site was closed as it was late afternoon but we were able to see most of it from the road.

We saw on the map that there was a road back from the lake to Messolonghi that ran over the mountains and decided to take it.  We had one wrong turn as we tried to find the road; one of the locals was quite bemused as we drove past him up in to a dead end beyond his house and back past him again.  We stopped and waved the map at him and he realised the problem - despite the language barrier he soon had us heading in the right direction.

One on the right road we were rewarded with fantastic views along with what felt at times like treacherous hair pin bends as we wound our way up and then down the mountain.

The truck drivers’ work stoppage is having an impact at some of the supermarkets now.  We tried a couple before getting the bits we wanted for dinner at Carrefour.  Back at Pyxis we cooked a late dinner aboard.
