In the Santa Cruz fishmarket they clean the fish as
soon as they are brought off the boats. The pelicans queue up
for scraps and, as if watching a tennis game, their heads twitch in unison
every time they think the guy might be about to throw something
away. Sometimes the scrap is too big for the pelican to swallow
whole and then it is stuck with a crop full of fish, with half a
dozen other pelicans hustling it and trying to make it spit it
out.
