The wind freshened a little in the day but held direction for a nice fast close reach into the Bay of Islands. We approached with the sun setting over the land and at about 9pm chose to anchor in Whale bay, hoping that the chart was accurate as the last of the sun faded and before moonlight confirmed that we were in the jaws of a high sided sheltered bay.
This morning the sun is just catching the steep green hills with a few black timber clad houses overlooking the bay.
All the warnings of having to endure storms to reach New Zealand have proved unfounded so I presume we have been very lucky with an easy passage.
I have sent an email giving an eta at the quarantine dock so we need to bag up our foodstuff, fill in a bunch of forms and up the anchor for the last few miles into Opua.
