The San Juan Islands

Famed for nearly starting the so-called Pig war between the British and Americans. The islands are in the gateway between the Salish Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Cold water nutrients brought up by currents from the ocean floor flow into the Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands and Canada’s Georgia Strait. With the salmon run as well there are resident Orca pods (3) as well as many summer whale visitors. The fabulously well organised WSF (Washington State Ferries) will take you to 4 of the 172 named islands of San Juan. All we had to do for the RV to meet the car 22’ limit was put the bikes inside and thus, for $80 we could visit all 4 if we so chose ($80 is the fare to San Juan Island, the return trips via Orcas Island and Lopez were free!). We decided to visit 3 of the islands and eat out at the ‘top’ restaurant on each island. At the end of the trip we had both put weight on!

The San Juan Islands are still slowly sailing through the cool waters of the Salish Sea at about 1.5” per year.
