We are going to drive through Oregon with
only brief stops
as leaving Washington State involved driving through lots of
snow and ice.
Oregon seemed little better weather-wise
and our two nights here were very cold, the second
getting down to 31F.
The High Desert Museum provided a short stop to educate
ourselves about the
settlers, wildlife, Native Americans and geology of the plains
area. Whilst one
of the guides chatted with us about grizzly encounters, he said
we were alright
as long as it wasn’t chuffing. As this is exactly the sound we
heard and it
never took its eyes off Caroline this indicates Caroline was
being considered
as food – a cheery thought.
Next stop was Newberry National Volcanic Monument and this is
where the 1960s
astronauts trained in use of their spacesuits. Due to the snow
and ice there
was little we could do here; we did have a very pleasant
riverside walk to some
waterfalls.
It is all a little too rushed and we will have to return to some
places.
