At Ponce the museum had a special exhibition of 'Castas' as New Spain found that the population became an endless mix of natives, Spanish colonisers and West African slaves, so used Castas paintings as a way of classifying the 'hybrids' (museum word) by means of imaginary portraits of mixed race families.

The museum states “In some ways, the fluid spectrum depicted in Casta paintings foreshow the self-perception of many Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in 21st Century America, people of uncertain ethnic origin, neither European or black”.
