To say that American history is confusing is an understatement. Billy the kid is probably the most famous character in this particular historical mess. Basically,LG Murphy owned the only store in town, had many influential friends and was none too happy when John Tunstall set up a competing store. Both owners had their own legally sworn posse – those riding for the house of Murphy and 'The Regulators' for Tunstall, which included Billy the kid. Numerous posse shoot-outs took place, even the army took sides and Lincoln's main street was called the most dangerous street in America by the then president RB Hayes. Then everyone got an amnesty, which didn't last as another murder took place. Billy the kid is let off again, in respect of his murder of Brady by Governor Wallace if he testifies in another murder trial. Billy does testify, but Governor Wallace doesn't keep his part of the bargain. Billy escapes jail while waiting to be hung by killing two more of Murphy's men, then gets shot while visiting his girlfriend.

If Billy the kid could mosey on down the main street of Lincoln today, apart from the tarmac and parked cars he would have no problem recognising where he was.
