La Parguera was an unwelcoming second home kind of place for more wealthy locals, There were signs on jetties everywhere 'no inflatables' and 'Private' – the only signs in English.

Eventually we asked a couple of locals where a laundromat was (according to our guide there are 2). They had never heard of any, so we asked another guy standing on the University dock and he took us to his house and had his daughter look after our washing while we went for dinner and he went back to work!

JJ is a University professor of marine biology from Venezuela, via Australia, so after dinner, while we waited for the laundry to finish, we had an in depth discussion on ecology and politics.
