There were some fine colonial buildings still in use and being well maintained. We’d never seen such a big pandanus stall before, confirming what an important product the pandanus mats are to the weavers and national economy. Sirens sounded throughout the working days to notify break times and the start and finish of the working day. On one day they were testing the Tsunami Warning, time and again for a number of hours. The verbal warning concluded with the words, “The tsunami warning is now over, you may resume your duties.” I felt as if I was in a Prisoner of War Camp!

The four old ships sharing the anchor of the one on the right were just one example of precarious accidents waiting to happen. Our mud holding was good but we were in dubious company!
