On 15th November we flew out of Leros to Athens where we stayed for a few nights to explore the city.

The airport and the sub way were very modern and clean however the same could not be said about the City in general !

Athens is rather sad and run down and there was an air of unrest with regular demonstrations in the centre, very much a reflection of the current economic state.

However the Acropolis, standing above the city was a sight to behold and the newly built Acropolis museum was amazing, especially the reproduction of the Parthenon built in alignment with the original that can be seen from the museum windows.

In the evenings we found some lovely Greek restaurants nestled around the base of the Acropolis, just a few stops away from our hotel on the subway.

We took the open top bus tour around the city, taking in the changing of the guards at Parliament House where there were constantly groups of journalists and riot police. Not surprising as we were visiting at the time when the EU - Greek loan was being re appraised and their prime minister had just resigned.

At the famous Archiological Museum we stayed on the bus as there were lots of ‘hooded’ youths milling around and we had been warned that it was a drug dealing area and not safe, especially at night. Unfortunately most of the buildings in Athens, new and old, have been defaced with graffiti.

It was also very cold in Athens which was a bit of a shock to the system, so we weren’t sad to be leaving a few days later and continuing our journey back home to the UK !
