Istanbul day 2
This morning was lost unexpectedly with researching and
booking our journey from We had lunch in a very old, traditional Turkish restaurant, the
decoration resembled Hotel du Vin, and the only lunchtime menu served is salad
and kebabs, very simple but delicious. Then we set off for a walking tour from The Grand Bizaar consisted of lots of little shops in the
main arch lined streets spreading out into narrow alleyways where the shops were
replaced with market stalls, and finally spilling outside into a jumble of
rubbish for sale. If you liked the seventies fashion this is the place for you…
nylon, lace, frills, leather coats and white wedding dresses full of swirls,
ruffles, ribbons and bows ! We weren’t tempted and squeezed our way through the
crowds towards the spice market. For the locals, the fashion seems to be colourful headscarves
combined with a long mac – very chic ! The spice market was more interesting – Turkish teas
and Turkish delight mmm On to the waterfront to see the ferries and cruise ships,
and the fishermen on the quayside. The air was filled with the aroma of fresh mackerel cooking on
the barbeque, a very popular snack served in a bun with salad, or you could also sample freshly caught muscles. To round off the day we hopped on the tram back to the
centre where we found a Turkish cake shop and sat out on the pavement for
Turkish tea, walnut Baclava and strawberry tarts – perfect ! |
