Bikers not sailors for a day!

We toured the island today on scooters with Paul & Derry – great fun,

although Mark is not sure how this will effect his street cred with the bike boys !

Bonaire is famous for it’s diving, there are marked sites all along the island where you see

Hire cars pull up, a couple of divers gear up and go into the water.

It is very safe and you rarely see instructor

led groups as it is so easy to find the sites for

yourself.

Bonaire is also known for its salt pans

and salt has always been a big commodity for

the island.

Until 1863 slaves were used to run the salt

industry and the restored slave houses can

be seen all along the salt pans. You can also

see the salt mountains.

There are large obelisks along the coast which were used to guide the cargo ships

coming in to load salt.

When slavery was abolished in 1863 the Spanish bought donkeys to

the island to cart water, salt and other goods and this is where the

huge population of donkeys has originated from.

We stopped for lunch at a place called Lac Bay where all the

water sports take place including kite surfing and windsurfing.

The beach bar

was like an après

ski bar and the bar

staff wore

jeans, boots and

scarves.

Very dutch !

Our tour continued

to the original town

on the island and then

past the flamingos.

It was a last minute rush to get back to the marina

Before 5pm to settle our account ready for an early

start tomorrow and so we hitched a lift in the back

of a pick up truck !

Never a dull moment !

Tomorrow we are leaving for Porvenir

We have pre cooked our meals for four days, Derry

made two Dinners and so did I, so we are ready

for a bumpy ride and looking forward to arriving

in San Blas.
