Fun & Games at Sea
Position 19:42.476S 150:46.022E We had a non eventful night which was very good but we have
had a few fun and games this morning ! After defrosting the freezer I cooked some chicken with
ginger, chillis and lime and thought it would be nice to transfer some of this along
with a couple of steaks to the guys on Fai Tira. We wrapped up the food and tied it to a large fender, then
we tied a long line to the fender and fed it overboard, back to Fai Tira. Unfortunately we misjudged the length of the line needed and
had to quickly tie four more warps together by which time the drag was so much
that the food came away and floated off and then the final knot came undone (an
old line that wasn’t very flexible) and the fender and all our warps
floated off too ! We radioed Angel and they turned around to practise ‘man
overboard’ drill by retrieving the fender and lines. More drama continued as Angel came alongside and threw us
our line, they continued to feed it out but then threw the fender over and it
floated free allowing the line to slacken and get stuck under our boat ! Mark doned his mask and snorkel and, with a line secured
around him, took a look underneath. Of course, the rope was around the prop, we
clicked the engine into gear and the prop cutter cut through the rope and
released it. We are now on our way again but the events have cost us some
time so no more antics as we need to arrive in Mackay before dark tomorrow. I had been feeding the sharks with left over meat from the
freezer all morning so luckily they weren’t interested in taking a nibble
at Mark !! Still, a few more lessons learnt. |
