F***ing Flying Fish !
position 08:29.21S 122:54.56W Ashley took a wave over the cockpit last night on his watch,
not just any wave but one containing a shoal of flying fish. One rather large fish hit him on the head, five thrashed
around the cockpit floor, one went down the hatch and the rest were splattered
all over the decks ! When I took over my watch at 7.00am it looked liked Armageddon
! I picked up 109 fish from the decks and Ashley had already
thrown back 17 that had been thrashing around after the wave hit. There were scales everywhere, I gave the cockpit a good
clean and threw buckets of sea water over the decks to wash away the debris. Finally I came below, wiped the surfaces and plumped the
cushions only to find another large fish under the cushion, on the settee –
obviously settled in front of the DVD for the night ! The mornings commotion woke Mark and he proceeded to have everyone
on deck, complete with life jackets and harnesses, to hoist the poles and put
out the twistle rig. Washing and bread making followed so a very busy morning
indeed. We are continuing to cover 200 miles (over the ground) each
24 hr period and we are scheduled to arrive on Saturday 10th April
which will make it a record trip. Sun is shining today and I have just put out the fishing
line with a note attached to say Mahi Mahi only – much more polite than
Mark’s suggestion of F‘**k off Tuna ! Have a lovely Bank Holiday. |
