A good sail all the way to Syros with 20-30 knots of wind on the beam.

We entered the main harbour of Ermoupolis, at first it wasn’t clear where to moor as there were no other yachts in the main town area and the small marina was a little out of the way, however we spotted some cleats and electric boxes and moored up right outside the string of waterfront cafes.

Ermoupolis is the largest town and the capital of all the Cyclades.

The buildings are very impressive 19th century mansions with several stories and wrought iron balconies, quite a contrast to the low, white cube buildings of Mykanos.

Behind the waterfront is the large 18th century square with the town hall and bandstand, very grand.

We found some nice restaurants nestled in the small backstreets.

Our afternoon siesta was rudely interrupted by a fellow sailor who came to warn us that it was not safe to stay where we were moored and several other yachts had retreated to the marina the previous day.

Since we were beginning to rock around a lot and the stern cleat had become quite loose from the lines snatching, we decided to move.

It was 6.00pm, the marina was almost full and very small for manoevering Blue Magic in high cross winds – so a quick decision – we set off for a bay 6 miles around the coast.
