We hired a car and driver for the day to explore Bali and our first stop was Ubud, the cultural and craft centre of Bali.

We spent a few hours wandering around the art, jewellery and wooden handicraft shops and visited the market which was a maze of narrow walkways with hundreds of colourful stalls.

Back in the car, as we drove out of Ubud, the roads were lined both sides with hundreds of shops displaying stone statues, wooden artifacts and basket ware.

We stopped to take some photos of the rice fields on our way up to the volcano. These pictures demonstrate the irrigation systems in place so that the rain water filters down through each layer and allows rice to be grown year round in Bali.

Next stop, the volcano, which was a dramatic site peaking out from the cloud and mist.

We had lunch at a restaurant with views out to the volcano – but it was cold and windy, so we didn’t stay too long !

On our way back to Sanur we stopped at one of the many jewellery houses to take a look.

Kirsty found a ring that she liked and the bartering began ….

After an initial price of 570,000 rupiahs they finally accepted 150,000 (around £12)
