The islands of Galapagos are almost entirely volcanic and have risen directly from the ocean floor.

The archipelago is around 3-5 million years old and they straddle the equator in the mid Pacific Ocean.

Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835  and that is where his theory of evolution and natural selection was born.
