John and Sue flew into Porvenir and joined Blue Magic ready to
explore the San Blas islands, or rather ‘Kuna Yala which is the Kuna
Indians name for their islands.
We are anchored off Kanlildup island today and it is real
Robinson Crusoe land.
Tiny islands crammed with palm trees that seem to sprout out
from the water at all angles.
We saw a huge stingray and lots of pretty star fish whilst snorkelling
today and we walked right around the island on the white sandy beach. This
island is uninhabited except for butterflies, pelicans, egrets, humming birds,
sea urchins, crabs and fish.
Tomorrow we are going to Mormoake Tupu which is a major
village and we must ask permission from the chief ‘Sahila’ to land
on his island.
The island is inhabited by Kuna Indians who live in
communities in pretty huts, the islands are very well kept, clean and tidy with
good school huts and a big hut where ‘Congreso’ is held at 6pm each
The congreso is a get together of the community each evening
for people to air there grievances and problems and resolve them together,
Kuna Yala, is a matrilineal society, the woman control the
money and they also choose their husbands who then move into the woman’s
family compound !
