While we were getting Suzie Too ready for hauling out we were recommended by Clive Hook Marine and also by a local lad, Ivan from Extreme Marine, to put a liquid wax on the hull to help protect the blue gel coat from the UV – you need one with Carnauba Wax in it, cos it stays soft and comes off easily later. It’s made from some Brazilian tree – I’m a big fan of Brazilian’s – very nice. The best place for this wax, was a store on Old Parham Road in St Johns called Outdoor World where they have a whole Auto Accessory section and a full range of Yamaha toys, jets skis, motor bikes, quad bikes, outboards – including the full Yamaha Enduro 2 stroke range, and a selection of Flexboat and Apex of dinghies. We were very impressed with this Flexboat SR12SLX – a 12ft Hypalon RIB with an integral console and seating that only weighs 120kg, excluding the engine. The driving position looks especially interesting as it would keep the bow down, but I’m not sure about whether it may be a bit of a jockey ride up there – it was also well priced at USD$10,000 including an F40 Yamaha 40HP 4 stroke engine, the RIB is rated up to 50HP which might be a bit excessive even for me. These models are widely available in the Caribbean and are made in one of the BRIC countries – Brazil – so the quality should be quite good – remember a dinghy isn’t for life – it’s only until it get stolen !! It is the double hull, with an integral bilge pump, fuel tanks and battery are stored in lockers under the seats, so a very neat solution – the demo model in the store was yellow, which is a bit startling, but they do the usual “50 Shades of Grey”, if that’s your thing – see the colours below – and of course you will need to supply your own Bikini Babes.
