Title: Necessity is under way in the Aleuts headed for Nikolski

Our position is 52:53:63N 170:35:85W
It has been a beautiful crossing although a cold one and with very little wind. A few hours ago we run into a pod of 8-10 orcas. They were quite playful and inquisitive around the boat. Even if it was getting slightly dark we got some good pictures.
The settlement in Adak turned out to be an interesting one. This is a former navy base with housing for 6000+. That is quite adequate for the 130 people living there in summer with even less in the winter. There is a small school, a cannery and the option of hunting as much caribou (possibly reindeer) as you want. There are big flocks of bold eagles and we were met by a couple of sea otters when entering the harbour. A good place if you are fond of nature and can take the cold. It is not a good place if you are fond of shopping. The local store was among the most expensive we have seen. Good then that the selection of goods are not particularly tempting.
In 12 hours we will be in Nikolski. There may be more news after that.
Take care,
Katherine & Jan Fr.
