Necessity has now crossed the date line and is in the Western Hemisphere. More specifically we are in Bay of Islands, an inland sea with sounds and inlets. It is beautiful, and if we are patient we are likely to see caribou on land and sea otters in the water. A trip on land yeasterday showed clear tracks of the former. It also showed that there are cloud berries here, although unfortunately not yet. I wonder how often they get ripe before winter?
There is a settlement on the other side of the island that we are going to visit in a day or two. It used to be a nuclear base during the cold war, so 20 years ago we would have been chased off the island. It actually happened in 89 to a fellow member of our cruising club back home.
Right now there is no wind and clear weather. Yeasterday I actually went for a swim. It is odd what you do to inspect the propeller. The water temerature? - 6 degrees Celcius. Necessity has come a long way since Singapore five months ago.
Take care,
Katherine & Jan Fr.
